Child vs. Adult Circumcision in Malaysia: What You Need to Know

Child vs. adult circumcision in Malaysia

Circumcision involves surgical removal of part or all of the foreskin of the penis.

In Malaysia, the majority of boys will undergo this procedure for religious or cultural reasons. It is usually done just before puberty as a passage to manhood.

For adults, circumcision is also done widely, usually for hygienic purposes or due to frequent infection/physiological problems.

When Should Circumcision Be Performed?

There is no age limit when it comes to circumcision.

  • In children, it is usually performed between the age of 7-12 years old.
  • Neonatal circumcision is also widely practiced currently. It is usually done on the first or second day after the baby’s birth.

Circumcision in Malaysia is usually done for religious purposes.

However, circumcision is recommended when a man has a tight foreskin (phimosis), or to treat recurring foreskin tear/infection (Balanitis).

Some men undergo circumcision for easier genital hygiene: The removal of the foreskin simplifies the process of cleaning the penis.

Laser Circumcision Malaysia: Advanced Technology for Better Outcomes

Our clinic offers laser circumcision in Malaysia, a modern approach that provides several advantages over traditional methods. Laser circumcision uses precision laser technology to perform the procedure with enhanced accuracy and reduced bleeding.

This advanced technique is particularly beneficial for both adult circumcision clinic patients and younger children, offering faster healing times and minimal discomfort. The laser method cauterises as it cuts, reducing the risk of infection and promoting quicker recovery.

For adults, laser circumcision is priced at RM1,000, while our stapler circumcision is priced at RM1,700 (normal price RM2,000).

Stapler CircumcisionRM1,700 (Normal Price RM2,000)RM1,200

Our experienced doctors have successfully performed laser circumcision for hundreds of patients, delivering stellar results with personalised care throughout the process.

How Is Circumcision Performed?

We usually perform 2 methods of circumcision:

1. Dorsal slit method

An incision along the upper length of the foreskin, and the foreskin is removed. The incision is then closed by opposing edges in the horizontal plane. Dissolvable sutures are placed between the 2 remaining edges.

2. Stapler method

Two rows of staples are placed around the foreskin, and a cutting blade is used to remove the excess tissue. The stapler is then removed, leaving behind a circular scar around the circumference of the penis.

A circumcision procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.

Adult Circumcision Clinic vs Kids Circumcision Malaysia: Understanding the Differences

While the procedure itself is similar, there are important differences between adult and paediatric circumcision that affect preparation, recovery and care approach.

Procedure Duration

Kid’s circumcision in Malaysia typically takes 20 to 25 minutes, while adult procedures may take 30 to 40 minutes due to anatomical differences.

Anaesthesia Approach

Children often receive local anaesthesia with sedation options, while our adult circumcision clinic typically uses local anaesthesia alone.

Recovery Timeline

Kids generally heal within 7 to 10 days, while adults may require 2 to 3 weeks for complete recovery, with full healing up to six weeks.

Post-Care Requirements

Adult patients need to manage erections during healing and may require more pain management, while children need parental supervision for wound care.

Activity Restrictions

Children can typically return to school within 3 to 5 days, while adults may need to avoid strenuous work and exercise for 2 to 3 weeks.

Reasons for Procedure

Kids circumcision in Malaysia is primarily cultural or religious, while adult procedures often address medical conditions like phimosis or recurrent infections.

Does Circumcision Hurt For 15 Year Olds?

Local anaesthesia cream or injections are given beforehand to numb the penis. Pain is not felt during the procedure and once the anaesthesia wears off, oral painkillers are given to control the pain.

Recovery Time

Recovery time for child circumcision usually takes about 7 to 10 days.

However, circumcision recovery time is longer for adults.

In most cases, you’ll recover in two to three weeks, but it may take as long as six weeks.

What are the risks or complications of circumcision?

Circumcision is a routine, safe procedure.

But, like any surgery, there are some risks. Potential risks may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Cutting the foreskin too long or too short
  • Irritation at the tip of the penis
  • The opening at the tip of the penis narrows
  • Inflammation at the tip of the penis

In rare cases, the foreskin doesn’t heal properly and can adhere to the end of the penis.

If this happens, you may need a circumcision revision and this can be done at a men’s health treatment centre.

When Should I Call A Healthcare Provider?

Call a health care clinic if you see signs that your wound isn’t healing well or you have signs of an infection.

These signs may include:

  • A fever over 38 degrees Celsius
  • Frequent bleeding or bleeding that doesn’t stop.
  • Chills
  • Pus around their incisions with a foul odour.
  • Unable to pass urine 12 hours after the procedure

Circumcision Costs in Malaysia

Stapler Circumcision costs RM1700 while Dorsal slit procedure costs RM1000. Prices exclude medications post procedure.

Is it better to be circumcised or uncircumcised?

Some benefits of circumcision include:

  • Improve personal hygiene
  • Lower the risks of urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Reduce the risk of penile infection
  • Reduce the risk of penile cancer
  • Reduce risk of contracting sexually transmitted disease

Studies have shown that early-circumcised men reported lower attachment security and lower emotional stability while no differences in empathy or trust were found.

Research has also shown there are no differences in how an uncircumcised penis and a circumcised penis respond to touch stimulation and orgasm.

What Happens If You Don’t Circumcise?

Circumcision is a personal choice influenced by cultural, religious, medical or personal reasons.

Remaining uncircumcised is perfectly healthy provided good personal hygiene is maintained.

In conclusion, circumcision can be done in both child and adult.

Please consult medical professionals to enquire more regarding the procedure or you can do a medical check online in Malaysia through Universal Clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions About Circumcision in Malaysia

What is the best age for circumcision in Malaysia?

There is no single best age. Children are commonly circumcised between 7 and 12 years old in line with cultural and religious tradition, and neonatal circumcision on the first or second day after birth is also widely practised. Adults can undergo the procedure at any age, often for medical reasons such as phimosis or recurring infection.

How long does the circumcision procedure take?

A standard circumcision takes approximately 30 minutes. Kids circumcision typically takes 20 to 25 minutes, while adult procedures may take 30 to 40 minutes due to anatomical differences.

Is laser circumcision better than traditional methods?

Laser circumcision offers enhanced accuracy and reduced bleeding compared with traditional dorsal slit or stapler methods, as the laser cauterises tissue as it cuts. This can mean faster healing times and minimal discomfort for both adults and children, though your doctor can advise on the most suitable method for your individual case.

What should I expect during recovery after adult circumcision?

Adult recovery generally takes two to three weeks, with full healing up to six weeks. You’ll need to manage erections during healing, may require more pain management than children do, and should avoid strenuous work and exercise for 2 to 3 weeks. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided by our team.

Does insurance cover circumcision in Malaysia?

Coverage depends on your individual insurance policy and whether the procedure is deemed medically necessary (such as for phimosis or recurring infection) rather than elective or religious/cultural. Please check directly with your insurance provider, or contact our clinic and we can help clarify what documentation may be required.

Can I choose between stapler and dorsal slit methods?

Yes. Both the stapler method (RM 1,700) and the dorsal slit procedure (RM 1,000) are available at our clinic. Our doctors will discuss which method best suits your needs, budget and recovery preferences during your consultation.

What makes your circumcision clinic different from others in Malaysia?

Our circumcision clinic combines experienced specialists who have performed thousands of procedures, modern techniques including both traditional and laser circumcision methods, and complete aftercare from consultation through recovery. We take a personalised, holistic approach for patients of all ages.
